Bizarre Victorian Era Portraits

25 Nov

The Victorian era of British history was the period of Queen Victoria’s reign from 20 June 1837 until her death on 22 January 1901. It was a long period of peace, prosperity, refined sensibilities and national self-confidence. Some scholars date the beginning of the period in terms of sensibilities and political concerns to the passage of the Reform Act 1832. [Wikipedia]

It was a tradition at some time during the Victorian era to have a picture of your child taken. The mother supported her child in a certain postition, especially when it was a baby who could not sit on its own, but the mother herself was hidden by a cloth, so that only the child would be visible on the picture.
